My Great Australian Bake Off Journey
Reflections on the competition that changed everything — from the audition process to the final showstopper, and the lessons I learned along the way.
When I first applied for the Great Australian Bake Off, I genuinely didn't think I'd make it past the initial application. The competition receives thousands of entries, and I was just someone who loved baking in their home kitchen. How could that possibly be enough?
The Audition Process
The audition process is more gruelling than people realise. It's not just about whether you can bake — it's about who you are as a person, how you handle pressure, whether you can articulate your passion for baking. There were multiple rounds of interviews, screen tests, and of course, practical baking challenges.
I remember making my grandmother's pandan chiffon cake for one of the auditions. It felt right to bring something with personal meaning, something that represented who I am as a baker. That cake has been with me through every significant moment in my life.
Life in the Tent
Nothing quite prepares you for the reality of baking under time pressure with cameras capturing your every move. The tent is simultaneously the most terrifying and magical place I've ever been.
The camaraderie between contestants is real. We'd stay up late comparing notes, sharing tips, supporting each other through failed proving and soggy bottoms. Some of my closest friendships came from those intense weeks of filming.
What the show doesn't fully capture is the emotional rollercoaster. The highs of a successful bake are exhilarating, but the lows — and there are many — feel devastating in the moment. Every elimination feels personal, even when it's not you leaving.
The Lessons
Looking back, I learned more about myself through that competition than I did in years of casual baking. Here's what stayed with me:
Trust your instincts. When you know something isn't working, don't wait to fix it. I learned to recognise the early signs of a bake going wrong and to have the courage to start again when necessary.
Technique is everything. You can have the most creative ideas in the world, but without solid technical foundations, they'll never fully come to life. The judges pushed me to refine my skills in ways I never had before.
Pressure reveals character. In those high-stress moments, you discover who you really are. I'm proud of how I handled both the victories and the setbacks.
What Comes Next
Winning changed the trajectory of my life. It gave me the platform and the confidence to launch Chez Arv Cakes & Desserts, to start this website, to share my recipes with people beyond my immediate circle.
But more than the opportunities, it reaffirmed what I've always believed: baking is about connection. It's about the joy of creating something from simple ingredients, the satisfaction of nourishing others, the universal language of a perfectly baked cake.
I'm grateful for every moment of that experience, and I hope to honour it by continuing to bake with intention, to learn and grow, and to share that journey with all of you.
